Jessica Alba joins the fight for safer alternatives to toxic chemicals
Actress, activist, and mother Jessica Alba made a trip to Washington DC this week to lend her influential voice to the effort to protect our health from toxic chemicals. Alba, who is pregnant with her second child, joined the Safer Chemicals Healthy Families campaign and moms from around the country in meeting with Key members of congress to ask them to co-sponsor the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 (S. 847), recently introduced by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ).
Among her stops was a meeting with Senator Scott Brown from Massachusetts, where she was joined by Massachusetts mom and cancer survivor, Erin Boles, of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. (Pictured here from left to right are Boles, Brown, Alba and Lindsay Dahl of the Safer Chemicals Healthy Families campaign.)
Their report from the meeting was that Senator Brown remembered strongly supporting the Safer Alternatives Bill here in Massachusetts (which passed the Massachsetts Senate in 2008 when he was a State Senator), supports the idea of replacing toxic chemicals with Safer Alternatives, and will review the specifics of S. 847.
Jessica Alba said of her involvment in the campaign:
Like many other moms out there, I try to buy safe products for my family, but that can’t be the only solution. You can’t hire a team of scientists to do your shopping for you. At some point the government has to step in and ensure that chemicals are safe before our children are exposed to them.
As you may have heard, I’ll be having my second child soon. It would be wonderful if Congress could pass this legislation in time for his or her arrival. Don’t send flowers. No fruit baskets. Instead, let’s all give the gift of health to each other with the Safe Chemicals Act.
We couldn't agree more that this problem is one to be solved in the halls of state legislatures and congress, not in grocery store or department store aisles, and we're thrilled to have Jessica Alba helping to send this message.
