Tell Congress to Take Action on Toxic Chemicals!
Did you know that 82,000 chemicals are in use today in the U.S. and only around 200 of these chemicals have been assessed for their safety? In other words, thousands of toxic chemicals, which have not been tested for safety, have been added to products that you use everyday from children’s toys, food can linings, mattresses, make-up to shampoo! And now there are hundreds of scientific studies out there showing that these chemicals are ending up in our bodies.
In addition, the law governing toxic chemicals in the U.S., the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA), is 33 years old and completely outdated.
So while, many of our most significant trading partners are implementing stronger chemical policies, we are falling further behind and putting the U.S. economy at risk for not being able to compete with the global marketplace. Essentially, we have a system here that is creating broad implications for our health care system and our economy.
In response to the lack of effective current chemical policies in the U.S., the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow (AHT) teamed up with other environmental health coalitions and organizations to create Safer States and has recently launched the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families campaign. This campaign is a national effort to create a comprehensive solution to chemical policy in the U.S.
If you believe you have the right to be healthy, the right to work in a safe environment, and the right to know what chemicals are in your body, declare your independence from toxic chemicals by sending a personalized message to Congress.
